Amongst The Catacombs of Nephren-Ka和Black Seeds of Vengeance两张专辑更是赢得了广泛的赞誉,现在NILE已经成为了大师级的的BRUTAL DEATH METAL乐队,在死亡金属音乐界享有崇高的声誉和地位。
A lot of people give Nile unnecessary grief. I don´t understand why, because the least anyone could do is give the band credit for sounding original, taking the death metal sound and combining it with Egyptian themes surrounding historical accounts they themselves have studied and taken a great level of interest in, all the while creating music that maintains brutality, groove and catchiness. I congratulate the band for their devotion to playing a gradually decaying style of music, saving it from becoming rudimentary by injecting something both fresh and envigorating.
Most claim that the band has never been able to top this release. I disagree, my personal favourite being "Black Seeds of Vengeance". A friend of mine rightfully pointed out that although the ferocity displayed by the music has decreased, the musicianship has improved dramatically. That being said, this is easily one of the best album´s I own (all of Nile´s releases are), and probably the most essential offering from the band.
I´ve never felt the need to fully absorb a Nile album (maybe not the case with "In Their Darkened Shrines", which is a bit more straightforward), preferring to pick out half of the riffs and let the rest wash over me with a sense of exploration and curiosity for every new listen. It is in this way that I ensure a fresh experience, while still remaining relatively familiar with the album so as not to feel lost and confused. It is a failsafe method of things never growing old and seldom listened to. There are few bands out there with the ability to do this and keep me coming back for more.
The production is impressive for a debut album. Every band member sounds incredible in the vocal department, most definitely Karl Sanders. The drumming goes up alongside the best of them, complimenting the riffs nicely. A good example is with the use of the double kickdrum; see the stacatto played descending riff on "Serpent Headed Mask" - they try to emulate this on the album "Black Seeds of Vengeance", but it can´t be beaten here. I cream my pants every time.
The riffs are of a decent nature. Not spectacular by a long shot, but they concentrate more on creating an atmosphere along with the keyboards. The ancient Egyptian feel emanates from the speakers both rumbling and crushing I´ve been told they open their concerts with these samples), generating a maelstrom of power that is simply brilliant. All mixed in with the soloing, which appears to have the chaos and edge of Slayer fused with Meshuggah (very sharp sound, especially on the higher notes), "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" is a must.
Listen to this in its entirety. You can´t go wrong.
