As a result, findings about women and the use of gender as an analytic category have profoundly reshaped virtually every other field within the discipline. My own work has focused on the history of feminism in the twentieth century, both from a social movement perspective (Personal Politics, Free Spaces) and from a policy perspective (Wage Justice). My more general history of American women (Born for Liberty) explores the ways in which women have reshaped public as well as private life over the course of several centuries. In part because of my own background as a Southerner and a civil rights activist, I have always been especially interested in the intersections of race, class, and gender. This triad -- almost a mantra in some ways -- focuses on some of the most difficult and most interesting problems in women's history and forces the scholar to challenge categories that are too easily taken for granted.
