With ten years of recordings under her belt, the songs on Long Night Moon speak deftly in the voice of a woman who understands fully the joys and frustrations of adulthood without compromising the wit and gentle spirit that have always characterized her work. Backed by a stellar band including John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter), John Sands (Aimee Mann), Mark Rivard (Morphine, Shawn Colvin), Kevin Barry (Paula Cole, Jonatha Brooke). The CD was produced by Lorne Entress. The disc Features: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Erin McKeown and Chris Trapper (The Push Stars). (Compass Records) Catie Curtis has hit two extremes on Long Night Moon: several tracks explore her feelings as the new mother of two adopted little girls, while one of the songs, "People Look Around," deals with politics and social issues on a nearly global scale. Not surprisingly, that track is the biggest and most anthemic one on the album, and also the least effective — even as it gets your dander up and makes you feel like part of a right-thinking community, it tacitly reminds you that songs have much more power to make people feel good about themselves that they do to change the world. The real payoff comes from the songs whose frames of reference match their spheres of impact: on the patient but sweetly longing title track, Curtis waits for the arrival of her daughter; on the sharply observed "Rope S... Catie Curtis delivers her most personal effort to date with Long Night Moon, an intricate work of stripped down modern folk. With grace and confidence, a more mature Curtis mingles reflections on motherhood (New Flowers), cold New England winters (Hey California) and delayed gratification (Long Night Moon, a song written about waiting for the belated arrival of her adopted baby daughter) with the unflinching dedication to social issues that has long characterized her strongest work. Long Night Moon features the track People Look Around for which Curtis (along with co-writer Mark Erelli) was honored with the Grand Prize in this year's International Songwriting Competition (out of 15,000 entries from 82 countries). People Look Around addresses the human toll and the divisive political landscape that arose in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Produced by Lorne Entress (Lori McKenna, Mark Erelli, Alastair Moock), Curtis & Entress focused on simple arrangements for Long Night Moon featuring strings and vintage instruments to create a soundscape with an often hushed quality that never overwhelms her sweet, strong voice. Recorded over several months, the songs on this record have a raw and organic quality that reflects Curtis' live performance style.
