There isn't anything new in Ja Zoo, just like the style of Hide as usual, but on the other hand, all fans need at that time is just an album of HIDE, as he died few days before the album released. Of course, Hide mysteriously died in 1998, leaving behind his work with Spread Beaver (the greatest name for any back-up band ever) which mostly consisted of his third and final full-length studio release, Ja Zoo. Ja Zoo took forever to be released, probably due to Hide's death. The controversy surrounding it and his absence in the studio to finish the project no doubt held up the production of the album. In the lieu of Hide's death, two singles from the album were released to the public- "Rocket Dive" and "Hurry-Go-Round". The public was of course responsive and single sales were good. The following album sales were not as stellar as one would think they would be what with it being the last release from a dead artist. Still Ja Zoo did well, however it lacks the all-over-the-map kick that Psyence had. Ja Zoo features mostly rock. The musical style sort of bridges a gap between the first and second Hide albums. A kind of musical, 'two steps forward and one step back'. The songs are predominately either fast, metal-industrial bits, the pop sort of stuff ("Hurry-Go-Round") or just plain goof-ball stuff ("Fish Scratch Fever") with the occasional ballad ("Pink Cloud"). Some of the material is even reconstituted from other works such as the new version of "Doubt and Leatherface", which was a track off the Zilch project. In my personal opinion, this has got to be the best hide album. With upbeat, happy songs and powerful ballads, this is an album that all hide fans must own!
