深夜时份，一对情侣在湖水中央游泳，突然被漩涡卷走，其后再发生多宗地层下陷意外。地质学家莲娜认为事有蹊跷，于是深入追查，几经艰辛，终于发觉问题可能源自一个荒废的矿场，该矿场多年前曾发生灾难，有多人死亡，其中一人就是莲娜的哥哥。于是她决定与几个朋友深入矿洞探个究竟。原来矿灾之后，矿场东主并未进行填塞工程，令地底出现一个大洞，导致地面的塌陷事故。事情尚未解决，危机日益增加，公路地层开始下陷，市内的医院和球场出现裂痕，随时倒塌。另一方面，在矿井内进行研究的莲娜决定用炸药炸毁岩层，希望利用砂石填补大洞，阻止地面继续下陷………
