A classic jazz guitarist, vocal stylist, and composer, Dave Costa has had a roller coaster career, with brilliantly productive performance runs followed by periods dedicated to music education. He cut his teeth fronting “The Joint Convention”, a rock & roll band that worked the San Jose State and Stanford college campuses. He played soul for Jay Scott and Lonnie Henderson at LIttle Richard’s in Fremont, played latin for Rudy Vaca’s band at Arturo's Internacional in San Jose and covered the organ trio gig with Roger Glover at the El Camino Club in Santa Clara. While studying music in Boston, he was presented by Ruby Newman Orchestras and appeared at the Hampton Beach Casino in New Hampshire and Provincetown Inn on Cape Cod. In San Francisco, Walt Tolleson Musical Organization presented Costa at the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins, St. Francis, and Palace hotels, then put him center stage in Davies Symphony Hall to bring in the new year for the San Francisco Symphony Association. Costa then emerged as an instrumentalist, leading the Dave Costa Trio with drummer Jimmy Baum and bassist Frank Passantino. “ten strings and a drum” (San Francisco Musicworks OWR-0035) was released in March of 1996 and received significant air play and critical reviews that led to the “Impassioned” (Seaside Records SSDC143) album in March 1997. After an appearance at the San Jose Jazz Festival, Costa focused on developing his artistry and teaching until 2006 when he began his current run, playing and singing regularly at San Francisco’s famous Cliff House. His third album (“When The Love Bug Bites” DCM Records DCM-003) was released October 8 and is available for review.
