That surprising response seems perfectly reflected in this documentary about her life: a multi-faceted human being of great complexity, a political activist of tremendous courage and tenacity, and a rare talent that sang with many of the great protest voices of the twentieth century. She was also a sister, a mother, a daughter, a friend and a wife. Mary Wharton directed this look at Ms. Baez, effectively moving between the more current interviews with the star and her fellow history makers, and then using archival footage, news footage and personal clips to give a fuller view of an interesting political figure and entertainer. Between talent and politics, Joan Baez has always chosen politics. She was more pacifist than singer, but both were done with exquisite ability and determination. Surprises are carefully woven into the fabric of the film, such as the admission of insecurity that led to panic attacks while Ms. Baez was an early performer, her close ties to a sister that died at a young age of cancer, and her fear of commitment to any relationship. Her love and devotion to politics is what ultimately damaged her marriage and her family, a common sacrifice for those uncommon enough to have a higher vision. How Sweet the Sound Profiles a Political Personality Joan Baez, with her dark hair and beauty, was thought to be an Arab when she lived in Baghdad as a young girl. Forging her own unique path in her teen years, she began to sing with the wave of political songs and songsters from that era. Having a crystal clear voice that was well-suited to the songs espousing her political views, she became a popular icon of the changes for which she was a living witness: Civil Rights, Peace, and Human Rights all captured her attention. An early relationship with Bob Dylan led to disappointment as she hoped that Dylan would be the voice of the political positions she cherished; he preferred to sing. Baez was soon pulling men out of the induction lines, going to jail, going back on the lines to try to save the young men about to be conscripted to service in the military machine in Vietnam. Eventually, she married David Harris, an anti-war organizer who spent several years in jail. The time apart fractured the relationship, which lived on in their beautiful son, but was not to be redeemed in their marriage.
