理查德.克莱德曼1953年12月28日出生于法国。 1961年赢得当地钢琴竞赛。1965年进入巴黎国立音乐院进修。1969年以第一名毕业于巴黎音乐学院。1977年首次演奏Ballade pour Adeline(《水边的阿蒂丽娜》或曰《给爱德琳的诗》)而一举出名。1984年在美国纽约被授予The Prince of Romance（浪漫王子或曰钢琴王子）的称号。
