Staier studied piano and harpsichord in the Hochschule für Musik in Hanover, with Kurt Bauer and Erika Haase for piano and from Lajos Rovatkay for harpsichord, and also in Amsterdam. From 1983 until 1986 he was the harpsichord soloist for the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln. As of 1986 he has been an itinerant fortepiano soloist, an accompanist for lieder and piano soloist for the ensemble Les Adieux. Between 1987 and 1996 he was Dozent for Cembalo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. As soloist he has given a number of concerts with Concerto Köln, with the Freiburg Barockorchester, with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and with the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées Paris. Staier has made a number of recordings, of composers primarily from the Baroque through early Romantic eras, and is an often-broadcast soloist by the BBC (a search from the main page of BBC Radio 3 turns up many different search results, some broadcasts of commercial recordings, some from concerts and studio.)
