这部83年根据澳大利亚作家考琳·麦卡洛笔下的经典作品《荆棘鸟》拍摄而成的电视迷你剧集曾获得5座艾美奖，首播20余年仍高居全美收视率排行榜第二名。当中少不了曾创作《顽皮豹》《第凡内早餐》等电影原声的经典音乐宗师亨利·曼西尼的唯美巨献。这张专辑是亨利·曼西尼04年80岁生日时 Varese Sarabande 公司根据83年版重新发行专辑，专辑当中配乐也许在你看过电影后会更有感触，其中描述女主角“Meggie”（梅姬）的曲目旋律是主打旋律之一，长笛吹奏婉转流长，极之动听。在96年也出版了一张改编的电影原声音乐，名为《The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years 荆棘鸟:迷失的岁月》。
《荆棘鸟》讲述了20世纪上半叶澳洲一个新西兰移民家庭，女孩麦琪漂亮热情，同神父拉尔夫相爱炽烈。但神父的身份却让两人无法结合，心灰意冷的麦琪终转嫁他人。然而，在命运和内心的渴望刺激下，两人终于再次相遇，带来的却是无可抵御的悲剧。
