Easily her jazziest album yet, Chamberland's breathy croon entrances on each of these classics, including songs made popular by Shirley Horn, Nina Simone, Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon. The arrangements have a small ensemble feel to them - snappy bass is joined by the relaxed elegance of the piano; sax and trumpet both give the music a soulful edge, while soft drums and Chamberland's signature guitar add a cool, collected angle to the music. The bluesy groove of "Honeysuckle Rose" proves to be a wonderful pairing for the velvety smoothness of Chamberland's vocals and a cover of "Hit the Road Jack" gives the old standard a delightfully sultry edge. Also included are several original songs, including "Infectious Slow" and "When I Look at You." Chantal Chamberland, Québec-born performer has just released her much-anticipated fifth jazz CD, Chantal Chamberland No. 5. This is her tribute to the original artists. Using her unique style to make these songs like her own, Chamberland who co-produced the CD with Bob Doidge and Amy King at Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, made this a record going back to the basics and simplifying things. “The Other Woman”was a big band, big production, big sound recording. But this one was stripped down to a quartet – drums, bass, piano, sax – with guitar on some of the tracks. As implied by the title "5", this is her fifth album. Her four other albums are equally wonderful. She has a way of delivering lyrics in a smokey, sensual way that will keep you coming back for more and more. So sit back, enjoy a glass of your favorite wine, but be fair warned, this will be one of many purchases of Chantal Chamberland that will be made...Cheers! 水準稳定 上星期在整理CD柜时，才重听过这位来自加拿大的爵士女歌手於02年制作的处女作《This Is Our Time》，凑巧地今个星期就收到她这张出道十周年最新CD《No. 5》。No. 5顾名思义就是她的第五张唱片，她以往推出的唱片都有一个既定的方程式，就是演绎大量Standards，再加上一至两首法文歌曲(她在加拿大法语系的魁北克省出生)，又再酌量添上一两首自己的创作。今次也不例外，十三曲中，Standards/旧歌佔九首，再加一首法文歌及三首为她祖母而写的原创作品。方程式一样，亦同是用她Vocal Jazz手法的Smoky voice去演绎，所不同是今次又换回了爵士小组去演奏，而不是去年《The Other Woman》的大乐队演奏模式。整体看，水準十分稳定，唱来轻巧又温馨，情感拿捏不慍不火，几好听。 01.
