Understandably, they specialized in recording Ohio orchestras, specifically the Cleveland Orchestra under its then-current music director Lorin Maazel. And, also understandably, they choose to record standard repertoire, in the case of this disc from 1981, a combination of Tchaikovsky''s extremely popular "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture" and his "Nutcracker Suites." Maazel, who may be one of the most representatively American conductors of his generation, turns in straight-ahead interpretations -- his "Overture" draws an unbroken line from the opening woodwind chords through the rambunctious first theme, the romantic second theme and the violent development to the blazing coda, while his suite accentuates the work''s brilliant colors and vivacious rhythms -- and the Cleveland Orchestra, which was then surely one of the great American symphonies, turns straightforward performances -- the strings are powerful, the winds are colorful, the brass is forceful, and the tympanist has the strength of 10 men because his attacks are clean. Telarc''s sound is typical of its early digital recordings: very big, very bright, very vivid, perhaps just a bit too dynamic but still undeniably effective. Anyone looking for a coupling of the "Overture" and the "Suite" by an American conductor and orchestra will probably be well satisfied by this disc.
