As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composer's work will inevitably be omitted. The two and a half hours of music (21 tracks) provide a good cross section of Tchaikovsky's music, although there are several omissions which I feel make the collection slightly incomplete, notable amongst these being `Symphony no.2' (`Little Russian') and the `Capriccio Italien'. Other pieces which are included as excerpts, such as `The Nutcracker Suite' and `Swan Lake', really do need to be heard in their entirety to be fully appreciated, but there's only so much that will fit onto 2 CDs of course. To their credit however Naxos have included all (15 minutes) of the `1812 Overture', sensibly rejecting the ridiculous tendency of some collections to play just the last few minutes of the finale. The sleeve notes are helpful for those wanting a little more than these highlights, for they provide recommended further listening (all Naxos label CD's of course!). But for those who do not wish to delve any deeper and are content with these types of collections there are a number of other Naxos `Very Best Of' releases featuring other composers, which together can form the basis of a respectable and reasonably comprehensive classical music CD library. In summary, this is an informative and attractively presented mid priced CD providing a good introduction to Tchaikovsky which may help guide the listener towards a fuller appreciation of the composer's symphonic works, of which there are several box sets of the complete seven symphonies available on CD, or maybe to a greater understanding of his ballets and operas.
