Roma Trio: The Four Seasons

Following the trios led by Stefano Bollani and Giovanni Guidi, Roma Trio is another splended piano trio from Italy that debuted from Venus Records. The youngish trio consists of pianist Luca Mannutza (b. 1968), bassist Gianluca Renzi (b. 1975) and drummer Nicola Angelucci (b. 1979). They are all up and coming artists who have collectively played with Paolo Fresu, Steve Grossman, Fabrizio Bosso, Marc Johnson and Giovanni Mirabassi.
Following their Venus debut Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing and sophomore release Ciao Ciao Bambina comes a surprising third album which is entirely dedicated to the "jazzification" of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons concerti.
There have been many jazz interpretations of classical music since the pioneering works of Jacques Loussier, but attempts at The Four Seasons are rare. Roma Trio's approach here is decidedly modern and creative. They breathe new life into the compositions by employing boldly contemporary rhythms and launching into impressive, often fierce improvisations. This is definitely NOT your father's classical-turned-jazz experience! Highly recommended!
Due to the time constraints of the LP record, the program was released on two separate LPs. The LP version of Vol. 1 is available here.
The CD version of this album is available here.
