LUNA SEA gave its final performances on the 26th and 27th of 2000 in the Tokyo Dome. After that the band was dissolved. The band has been around for 11 years (9 years since their major debut) but they've finally decided that the time has come to end the band. They've released 9 albums and 14 singles, selling more than 10 million records, during their long career. In August of 1996 they already stopped once to "recharge batteries", but said that they would come back in December of 1997. Also their drummer, Shinya, called some attention for marrying ex-Morning Musume member, Ishiguro Aya (22), in May of 2000. The two of them already have a baby daughter together. When asked about the reasons for the breakup Ryuichi said, "When we finished our previous album (LUNACY, released in July), I felt that we couldn't do anything greater than that. If we stayed here (in the band) there would be moments that we could shine more than anyone else, but if you keep looking at the same light it becomes less dazzling. Rather than continue going after the same thing, we preferred to look for a brighter light." The members plan to pursue solo careers that have already brought them some success. Vocalist, Ryuichi, is producing under the initials R.K. for artists such as Uehara Takako (SPEED). As a final testament to the legendary band, this new best collection album, "PERIOD: The Best Selection", was released right before the band's final performance, just in time for Christmas. The album contains fifteen LUNA SEA hits, with all tracks digitally remastered, and four of the songs re-recorded entirely. The re-recorded songs are mostly their older works. They are tracks 11-13 and 15. The re-recorded songs are "BELIEVE", "Dejavu", "PRECIOUS...", and "WISH". The rest of the songs are remastered, but it's doubtful that you will notice any difference from the original tracks, especially in the newer ones from 1998 and 2000. At any rate, it's good to know that the remastering is there to bring the songs that need it up-to-date. The re-recorded songs are drastically different from the originals, giving LUNA SEA fans reason to buy the album for the new recordings alone. In many cases the new recordings have extended versions of the songs that are longer than the original versions; these ones were sometimes used in the band's more recent live performances. Ryuichi has changed his vocal style quite a lot since the time when these songs were originally recorded ~10 years ago. Ryuichi used to sound more desperate and gothic, but has since changed to a more 'nice guy' idol image (lots of fans like the old Ryuichi better). The vocal is an interesting change. The instrumentals have been polished with a few new flairs here and there, but have been kept mostly the same, according to tradition. The biggest differences noticed were in "PRECIOUS...", where Ryuichi's voice has added distortion effects in certain places and the tempo has been slowed down (a sign that the band has mellowed out in their older years). Indeed, they're not just a bunch of punk kids with weird hair anymore. Some of them have started families.
