Finally, Tyrone Power was allowed to act in something of substance, instead of playing a stiff in a tweed jacket, or a dapper dan in a white shirt. Tyrone proved he was more than a pretty face, by appearing as something of a lowlife who finally sees the light after a drunken and embarrassing slide into the sideshow world. When this movie came out, Zanuck didn't want it to be available to the public for long: he was afraid Tyrone's fans would not like his disheveled looks. It was ripped out of the theater quickly, which makes this movie a hard-to-find cult classic.
