1981年成军於纽约的民谣摇滚乐团一万个疯子(其团名来自一部恐怖电影「2,000 Maniacs」)，是由Natalie Merchant(主唱)、John Lombardo(吉他手)、Robert Buck(吉他手)、Steven Gustafson(贝斯手)和Jerry Ausugstyniak(鼓手)所组成。1985年，一万个疯子加入主流唱片公司发行了专辑「The Wishing Chair」，但成绩并不理想；两年后的专辑「In My Tribe」出现了两首上榜单曲Like The Weather、What’s The Matter Here终於让他们嚐到走红的滋味，同时这张专辑也在榜上停留77週之久(最高名次#37)；89年的「Blind Man’s Zoo」专辑，除了有Natalie创作曲Trouble Me外，专辑(最高名次#13)更有金唱片的纪录；而在92发行「Our Time in Eden」专辑后，Natalie Merchant为了让自己有所改变与更成长宣佈离开乐团。
