The band's fifth release in four years is the product of many hands, but the work of one heart. Principle songwriter Michael Nau's lyrics call to mind Dylan or Nilsson ghostwriting for Margo Guryan, all well-accompanied by a range of upbeat instrumentation. Somewhere along the timeline of pop and rock, "hippie" music changed from feel-good-y protest songs into acid-laced, uber-long overly repetitious psychedelia that, to be honest, has little merit outside the drug-addled mind. However, a few artists do their research to know that free-spirited pop music that began in the '60s and was lost somewhere along the way, holds a bit more merit and holds a somewhat timeless spirit in comparison. One of these would be Page France, and with its newest offering ... And the Family Telephone, the band attempts to re-enter that initial sense of good-natured playfulness into throwback tunes. On the band's third proper full-length we get a heavy dose of just this, a portal back to the Age of Aquarius, essentially, when music was more about feeling good and brought a utopian sense to the listener, in the way the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds did for much of the boomer generation. However, few elements will bar Page France from becoming the easygoing pop sensation of our generation and plainly put, it might be from taking a bit too much from Pet Sounds. Sure, ... And the Family Telephone has much going for it: well done harmonies, jangly guitar parts and some vintage synth tones, but the aforementioned "too much" comes from the word "Pet" rather than the sound.
