Their previous albums, namely "Amongst The Catacombs", "Black Seeds Of Vengeance" and "In Their Darkened Shrines", took the death metal community by storm and solidified their place among the deathmetal elite. A couple of line-up changes did not slow the band down and now they are back with a brand new album, entitled "Annihilation Of The Wicked". "Annihilation Of The Wicked" follows the same musical pathway as its predecessors. It namely combines imagery and themes inspired by Classical Egypt with blistering death/grind. There are some changes too, though. First of all, "Annihilation" contains more mid-tempo pieces than "Black Seeds Of Vengance" and "In Their Darkened Shrines", thus making this album a little bit slower than Nile's previous output. This does not mean that the band has slowed down, but the drum parts are more varied in tempo and patterns. This makes the songs more interesting and dynamic, instead of an inferno of blastbeats and raging guitars. Apparently, Karl and co. used the principle of "less is more" on the old Egyptian orchestration, because there is far less of that on the new album, compared to the old ones. The orchestrations are merely used as intros ("Dusk Falls", "Chapter") or as atmospheric parts during the tracks ("Spawn Of Uamati", "Annihilation Of The Wicked"). The songwriting has matured on this record, because all the different elements of the Nile sound have been mixed together better than ever. With "Cast Down The Heretic", "Sacrifice Unto Sabek", "The Burning Pits Of The Duat", "User-Maat-Re", "Spawn Of Of Uamenti" and "Annihilation Of The Wicked", Karl and co. have pinned down instant Nile classics which can rival with songs like "Black Seeds Of Vengeance", "Ramses Bringer Of War", "Stones Of Sorrow", "Unas Slayer Of Gods", "Masturbating The War God" and "The Blessed Death". Newcomer George Kollias (drums) proves he is a true asset to the Nile camp and also proves that he is in league with illustrious drummers like Tony Laureano (ex Nile), Derreck Roddy (Hate Eternal) and Dave Culcross (Malevolent Creation). Finally, the production duties were handled by Neil Kernon (Nevermore, Macabre, Red Harvest, Cannibal Corpse), assuring Nile's best sounding album to date and finally getting rid of the muddy productions which before plagued some Nile releases. "Annihilation Of The Wicked" is (arguably) Nile's best release so far. The compositions are the most interesting to date, the production is crystal clear and this record may be the ticket to a vast extension of their fanbase.
