本作是《最终幻想水晶编年史》系列的新作，也是世界上第一款实现跨越了DS和Wii两个平台，同时进行联机的游戏。通过 Wi-Fi，可以在世界各地的玩家内在DS或者Wii上进行最大4人的联机冒险。对于一些特殊操作，DS将使用触笔；Wii将使用控制器进行。在Wii上用Mii制作的角色，也可以在DS上出现。更可以通过全新搭载的聊天系统和队友进行即时交流。
故事采用原创主人公系统，玩家可以从4个种族中选择自己喜欢的角色。本作以远古时代失去了“水晶”的世界作为游戏的舞台，讲述了迎来成人之日的16岁主角第一次走出村外，为了解开巨塔的水晶之谜，向着未知的世界开始冒险的故事。
