A luxury ocean liner, Titanic, capsizes somewhere between Europe and America. Sigmund Freud, Austrian psychiatrist, publishes two books. Richter, a medicine manufacturer based in K?bánya, Hungary, starts selling Kalmopyrin, its very own patented antifebrile remedy. In a village somewhere, a small parish school, however, starts out the school year in quite ordinary fashion. This fall, the kids are overcome by a strange sense of wild mischief: they keep coming up with out-of-this-world pranks. Their perennial target is Szebeni, a shy, bespectacled boy who winds up losing his glasses every day. This year, the school welcomes a new gym teacher, Father Weigl. The young priest disapproves of his peers’ rather liberal approach to dealing with the students’ rowdy streak. Father Zoltan, home room teacher to the 7th graders, can no longer pay attention to the rumblings around him. His younger brother was deafened in a box fight, and was on his way to Boston, at Father Zoltan’s urging, for an operation. He was aboard the Titanic, and the official list of survivors and casualties has yet to be released.
