年轻时的Barney Wilen和Miles Davis在一起 A great little set from Barney Wilen's late revival period -- strong, solid blowing all the way through -- with a depth that almost matches his classics from the early days! The group here is a quintet -- with Enrico Rava on trumpet in the frontline alongside Wilen's tenor and soprano sax -- often joining Barney tightly on the head arrangements, in a mode that's strongly soulful, with plenty of classic touches. Many of the tunes are familiar jazz standards, but stretched out nicely with lots of room to roam around -- and a few great numbers on the set are of European origin, shorter, but with some wonderful colors and tones that Wilen illuminates with his horn -- and which the group plays with a slightly Latin flair in the rhythms. Barney Wilen's mother was French, his father a successful American dentist-turned-inventor. He grew up mostly on the French Riviera; the family left during World War II but returned upon its conclusion. According to Wilen himself, he was convinced to become a musician by his mother's friend, the poet Blaise Cendrars. As a teenager he started a youth jazz club in Nice, where he played often.
