剧情：
约翰是一个身患绝症的英国摄影记者，对他而言，97只代表着一无所有，回归只意味着失业和失恋。在他眼中，香港只是一片愁云惨淡，美梦已经粉碎，他除了失落无话可说、无事可做，不是因为香港回到了中国的怀抱，而是因为英国的衰退而失去了香港。
与詹妮之间的爱情是他生活的最后意义，他以为他爱上的是一个美丽的香港女子，一个他所眷恋和熟悉的香港的象征，并奢望能够带着这最后一点属于香港的浪漫余韵回到英国。但出人意料的是詹妮却来自大陆，拒绝了他的求婚，嫁做他人妇，作为香港未来的新人定居下来。
而约翰在香港街头偶遇的珍妮则是一个土生土长的本地女子，在生活的艰辛中苦苦挣扎，年少时曾与英国少年热恋，但仍被始乱终弃，并在左脸颊留下了永远的伤疤。三人的故事于1996年12月31日默默开始，戛然终止于1997年7月1日英国国旗颓然坠落时分。 （转自时光网）

此版本与网络流传和国内能购买到的DVD狮门版表面上看似乎时长要短，因为是欧洲发行的版本，制式的不同造成了片长感觉要短，实际上影片内容要更加完整，这是因为直接取台译字幕来合成视频可以完全匹配，好在多的只是结尾一段女主角的独白，而且还是巩俐的不标准普通话，但这个结尾让很多看不明白本片的人可以豁然开朗，本人看的时候就有某种触电的感觉。
