本片为2010威尼斯影展的竞赛片，旅法中国导演王兵首部剧情片，描述60年代初，在甘肃省夹边沟的劳改营发生2500人饿死的悲剧，写实呈现劳改犯过度饥饿吃下别人吐出的食物、人吃人的事实。
本片主要是参考纪实小说《夹边沟纪事》的情节，作者杨显惠采访了众多夹边沟幸存者，并以小说形式叙述他们的经历。夹边沟是在甘肃酒泉戈壁沙漠中的一个劳改农场，1957年到1960年，有3000多名右派被遣送至此做苦力，只有500多人活着离开。2000年起该书在《上海文学》和《小说界》上连载，一度引起轰动。其后由全国多家出版社结集出版。
导演王兵自幼丧父，看了《夹边沟纪事》后，才知道父死于夹边沟，尸骨无存。作为记录片导演，这是他的首部剧情片，而在创作过程中也曾用采访素材拍摄了夹边沟幸存者口述形式的记录片《和凤鸣》。
