Ted的好友Marshall突然告诉他，他要向自己相处了很久的女友Lily-一名幼儿园教师--求婚。Ted震惊之余，顿悟自己也需要赶快找到自己的真爱。他的朋友Barney自告奋勇的来帮忙，可他提供的都是一些馊主意。不过，Ted终于在附近的一家酒吧找到了自己的中意对象Robin，他一见钟情，但命运可不会这么眷顾Ted，Robin对他没有留下什么好印象，并把Ted给恐吓跑了。本剧叙述故事都是采用回忆闪回的方式。

At that moment, Ted realized that he had better get a move on if he also hopes to find true love. When Ted meets Robin (Cobie Smulders), he is sure it is love at first sight, but destiny may have something else in store. The series is narrated through flashbacks from the future.
